Learning Fun on the Farm for Chilton’s Youngsters

A learning adventure and tasty healthy treats awaited Chilton Primary’s young children on a visit to Felderland Farm near Sandwich.
The Year 1 group were exploring the agricultural centre as part of their ‘everchanging environments’ topic work.
During their visit they were lucky enough to have an informative talk from a local farmer based at Felderland. They learned about the variety of important tasks the farmers have to do, in order to ensure they have successful jobs.
He spoke to the children about the different crops that are grown on the farm and the products these can be used to make.
As a special treat the group was lucky enough to pick some delicious strawberries to take home.
Deput Head of School Hannah Cheshire explained: “This trip linked to the children's thematic learning this term where they are finding out about the basic structures of plants and trees and understanding the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
“As part of this, they have been on environment walks, made their own weather forecasts and dissected plants.
“The farm trip was a great way to show our young pupils how farm works first-hand, which helps expand the learning they do in our school classrooms and outdoor spaces.”
As part of their in-school work pupils are understanding growth – planting seeds and making simple observations as they changed and grew and used observational drawing to record this.
Across the year, the children also learnt about the four seasons and the key features that identify these seasons. They also found out about the differences between various plants and evergreen and deciduous trees while reading relevant texts including A Seed Is Sleepy, The Enormous Potato, and Plants Around The World.
Chilton Primary School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Upton Junior School in Broadstairs and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
