Eruption of Learning at RAPS

Exploring volcanoes ignited an eruption of curiosity and creativity at Ramsgate Arts Primary.
As part of their Incredible Earth topic, the Year 4 group have discovered what a volcano is, how they form and the different types that are found around the world.
They have developed their understanding of how volcanic eruptions occur and the powerful forces that shape our planet.
A particular highlight was the hands-on investigation into the viscosity of lava. Working with class teachers Helen McCurry and Claire O'Flaherty the children explored how different levels of viscosity affect the way lava flows, using liquids such as honey, shampoo, vinegar and ketchup.

This helped them understand why some lava moves quickly while other types are much thicker and flow more slowly. This practical activity brought their learning to life and encouraged them to think like real scientists!
Volcanoes are just one part of the children’s wider exploration of our incredible planet. They have also learnt about earthquakes, the water cycle and the structure of the Earth itself, building a deeper understanding of the natural processes that shape our world.

The pupils have also carried out their own independent research, using their findings to create beautiful pieces of work that showcase their knowledge, creativity and growing confidence as learners.

Assistant Head Teacher Kiki Amin said: “Year 4 pupils should be incredibly proud of their curiosity, enthusiasm and the wonderful work they have produced.”
