Tasty Fairtrade Lessons

The worldwide Fairtrade international food project has inspired children at Ramsgate Arts Primary to get baking in support of the initiative.

To bring their learning to life, pupils collaborated to design their own logos and muffin packaging, carefully considering colours, branding and presentation to make their products appealing to customers.

They also thought about how packaging can communicate an important message and encourage people to make ethical choices.

To bake their tasty muffins the young cooks followed recipes, developed practical skills and used the RAPS’ value of collaboration to create a product ready for sale.

They took their cakes home to sell to their families to raise donations for the Fairtrade Foundation, helping to support the important work it does around the world.

As part of the Year 5 Global Trade topic with teachers Jon Williams and Andrew Beraet, the group has been learning about global supply chains, where our food comes from, why we buy Fairtrade food and how this helps farmers and workers around the world receive fair pay for the products they grow and produce.

Pupils have explored the importance of making responsible choices as consumers and reflected on how the food they eat gets to their plates too.

Assistant Head Teacher Kiki Amin said: “We are incredibly proud of the pupils for their creativity, enthusiasm and teamwork throughout this project.

“They have discovered that global trade is about much more than buying and selling goods; it is also about fairness, responsibility and making a positive difference.”
