Good Sports at Friendly Viking Games

Everyone’s a winner at the annual games spectacular run by the Viking Academy Trust.

Competitors from each of the three partnership schools united in the name of sport in mixed teams for one of the area’s largest primary school events.

Almost 1400 pupils from Upton Juniors in Broadstairs, Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary took part in a range of events across the three school sites with age-appropriate events ensuring an even and fair playing field for competitors.

The weather took its toll on one of the outdoor days but the action continued in spite of the rain and damp with a range of indoor challenges.

And though the teams were doing their best for their inter-school house teams – red, blue, green and yellow – it was the spirit of fairness and friendship that really took the gold medal.

Viking Academy Trust Executive Head Teacher Michaela Lewis spoke for her colleagues and said: “The games were a great success yet again. Each year it illustrates a real togetherness between all the schools where everyone’s a winner.

“It is a big effort to organise the Viking Games - our sports staff do a magnificent job, together with their helpers, in creating a smooth-running and exciting competitive friendly spectacle of sports for our young competitors.

“The event has gone from strength to strength since it was launched in 2018 and such is the passion and commitment for the games that it continued through the summer of 2020 when the Covid pandemic meant children were competing at home in specially created competitions.

“The event has won praise from sports professionals who have been our guests during the years and every early summer it is an important part of our school calendars.

“We are continually seeking new ways to bring the children across Viking Academy Trust together to further develop friendships and build connections in our vibrant joint community.”

A variety of events and activities for the younger pupils included beam balancing, skittles, soft archery, egg and spoon race and space-hopper bouncy races. Older pupils enjoy tri golf, kwik cricket, tennis, soccer, netball, and tracks events.

Trust sports staff Carson Arthur and Cameron Keam from Chilton Primary, Callum Noble and Aidan McCollum from Upton, and Alice Piper from RAPS were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by all pupils across the age groups.

They said: “This was a fantastic event that shows the high levels of commitment and enjoyment our children have for the Viking Games. The whole week demonstrated friendship in sport and we are proud of them all, not just the winning house – it highlighted our Sport For All ethos at our schools.”
